Message for Jaffer

Ok a good friend of mine requested me to pass this message to u....

since its just information abt ajax... decided to post it here...

"a good friend of yours called "Hello Kitty" says that the new Google AJAX toolkit is the way of the future

and that there's no point in re-inventing the wheel, so you should use existing AJAX libraries, instead of trying to compensate for all the browser / platform inconsistancies yourself

also, AJAX is just part flagship technology for Web 2.0"

Learning AJAX

Since no one seems to be interested in my last post :) ... here's some more. AJAX seems to be the new thing that everyone's going after these days. One of the best sites I've seen using it are Microsoft's Live.com and Windows Live Mail ... really nicely built, but ofcoarse still buggy due to being in Beta.

I want some links to good AJAX reference sites. Sinces AJAX is not a tool, but just a way of using the Xmlhttprequest, there aren't much dedicated sites that I could find. I would appreciate if those of you who have actually worked with AJAX please post some good references...

And once again, wake up please.

Insomnia

Yeah, we're all wide awake (hopefully) :). Hmm ... why don't we discuss Pakistan's performance in the Software Design invitational at the Imagine Cup this year. How many teams are going from universities that you know (starting from your own)? There's only 1 team going from LUMS right now, and they're running into a few problems these days, which should be fixed hopefully by this week. The deadlines coming upon us too ...

Wake up

All right fellows, my last posts were not such atrocious that could fright people, lol. You people might be caught up in hourly exams or final exams. It will be out of the ordinary if you share your educational experiences of a day or two. That’s going to be healthy start of the discussion among us. What do you people say about this?

Launch 2006 @ LUMS

Though not the event report, you can find an informal synopsis of the event on my blog: http://thespoke.net/blogs/evangelist/archive/2006/02/14/938292.aspx

Launch Event in UIT

Thanks to Tayyaba for reminding us that we can post Launch Event Report here … Well, I have already posted at my blog… so here only pointing the link.

Launch @ LCWU
Narrated by
Tayyaba Khalil

With all the lights turned-off, students seated well, data show on the spot and video of Imagine Cup 2005 right on the move making the audience more enthusiastic and inquisitive of what was going to be presented in the event “Launch @ LCWU”. The event started exactly at the planned time. It was made possible due to the arrival of the speakers and audience well before time. No wonder, it was the most familiar tech name “Microsoft” which brought the students there right on time.

At 10:00 AM sharp all the expected audience inside the semi amphitheatre kind of Conference room of Computer Science Department, dazzling lights and echoing sounds of the imagine cup video, the speakers of the event busy talking with some faculty members in the front row and me wondering what’s left before the start. Yes, it was “Ready to Launch” banner which was being hanged on the front wall. I was just waiting for it to be hanged when a senior faculty member called me and asked me to start the session. After that I had to just call Mr. Saqib to come over. Without any hesitation he stood over, took the microphone and started to give his introduction. After the introduction, he talked about the Imagine Cup. How it all happened in 2005? , the participation from Pakistan, the six “Invitationals” of Imagine Cup 2006 and ended with how one can participate in the event.

ASP.Net Master Pages were Mr. Saqib’s next point of discussion. He presented the topic very effectively using the example and code of Qingqi airways website. He talked about how Master pages help to provide a consistent look and feel to all the web pages of a website as well as adding some dynamic features like “Login/Logout” without writing a single line of code. He explained it in a very simple language and most of the students seemed to understand it as a lot of questions were asked after his session. Mr. Saqib’s session ended at 10:50 AM. Without taking a single breath, he picked his laptop, placed it in his bag and moved hastily outside the Conference room. Though, he was ended with his part still we wanted him to stay there till the refreshment. Despite of his busy schedule and an exam awaiting the day after, he very softly agreed to stay there till the end. He moved back to Conference room and took a front seat.

Now it was Mr. Samiullah’s turn. He was there at the place of Mr. Rai Yawar Ijaz who could not make it to the event as he had some commitment in Rawalpindi. Mr. Sami-ullah started and also ended off discussing the Business Intelligence concepts and SQL Server Integration Services features introduced in SQL Server 2005. As Business Intelligence concepts were new to most of the students and also because there were no hands-on exercises so it all seemed very complex. He tried to explain a big Architecture diagram standing far away from it with utter confidence and expertise. Overall it seemed very interesting to the students and broadened their concepts. His session ended at 11:50 AM.

Yes, it was all ended from the speakers. I thanked both the speakers for their courtesy and for being there at Lahore College for Women University. The speakers were lead to the male staff room where refreshment was arranged for them.

Now, it was the time to give the so called “give-aways” to the students. There were 25 of them and were given by using the lucky draw scheme of picking a registration cum feedback form randomly. The forms were distributed by a student volunteer at the event start. This lucky draw game was played by Miss Maria Anjum, a young and dynamic faculty member of our computer science department. So at the end students enjoyed the whole thing.

While the speakers were having some refreshment, I and my friend Iram, asked the speakers some questions about INETA, Imagine Cup and some other topics. Iram helped me a great deal in organizing the event. Both of the speakers behaved very decently and were really willing to share their knowledge and experience.

Before the speakers could depart, the “Ready to Launch” banner had to be given back to them. We handed it over to Mr. Saqib Ilyas and said a note of thanks to both of them again for their cooperation to make the event a definite success.

Hmm ... I guess I didn't introduce myself properly the first time :) I'm Jaffer Haider, a BSc(Hons) student at LUMS, in my last quarter there.

A special welcome to our newest member, Waqar Aziz from GIKI. Good to have you with us.

Just to put something on the board for discussion, is everyone set for the next series of events, regarding 'Writing Secure Code'? How did everyone's LAUNCH events go?
